Real-time tracking of surgical instruments in the operating room
The goal of this project is to implement the next generation of accurate
real-time tracking of the position and orientation of objects moving in
space with a stereo electro-optical camera and active light-emitting diodes
(LEDs). The project consists of refining and developing methods for
position estimation and accuracy checking for the sophisticated commercial
real-time tracking system in the lab, which is part of the
computer-assisted surgery system we are developing. The work includes
characterizing the accuracy of the system and developing methods to improve it.
Design and implementation of a user interface for the
operating room
The goal of this project is to design and implement a user interface that
will help the the surgeon use with ease the FRACAS system to plan and
execute the surgery. The project consists of understanding the
requirements of the surgery, determining a work-flow protocol, and
implementing a user interface that ties together the different technical
capabilities of the FRACAS system, which include image processing, 3D model
construction, and real-time tracking. The project is ideally suited for
those who want a general, integrative view of a computer-aided surgery
system.
